Handicaps
Handicapping Basics
Players often ask, what is a golf handicap and why do I need one? Some players (men and women alike) believe that since they only play golf a couple of times a year, or only play 9 holes instead of 18 holes, that a handicap doesn’t apply to them. But it does!
So what is a handicap really?
A handicap is an indication of a player's ability. A specific formula is used to compute handicaps by factoring in a player's score and the difficulty of the course played. This gives players a handicap index. A player's handicap index determines the number of strokes a player receives depending on the difficulty of the course he/she plays. Your course handicap will be higher on a more difficult course and lower on an easier course.
Why would you want a handicap? A handicap allows players of different ability levels to compete with each other. Using handicaps helps to even the playing field, making the game more fun. You might need a handicap to participate in golf events and certain golf leagues, and it also gives you a way to track your improvement throughout the golf season.
When should I get a handicap?
If you are just learning to play golf and spend the majority of your time taking lessons or practicing, or if you play par-3 courses only, then it may be too early for you to get a handicap. Once you start playing 9-hole or 18-hole rounds on regulation courses, you should establish your handicap.
How do I get a handicap?
In order to establish a handicap, you must enter a minimum of 5 scores. You must also play your best round possible for each round of golf played, and post every acceptable round played (according to USGA rules). There are two options available to EWGA Members for establishing and tracking a handicap.
